Perishing Reefs

BY DANIEL CHURCHMAN
@ VOL 2 ON AUG 09, 2013

Daniel Churchman gives a talk on coral reefs. They are an extremely important part of our ecosystem. Cyanobacteria, which creates some reefs, create 70% of the oxygen we breathe. Coral reefs are not studied or talked about enough; the first symposium on cold water reefs was not done until 2000. Due to global warming, we may be the generation that talks about their extinction.

Kaden Cowan

We start the week of presentations with a rather special one, from 11-year-old Kaden Cowan, recorded at last week's PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 67. 11-year-old Kaden, a student at Yokohama International School in Japan, shows us the evolution of his art work from 2nd Grade to 6th Grade! Brilliant. This presentation shows many things -- Kaden's great artistic ability, the eloquence of a 6th grader and that the PechaKucha format allows everyone young and old alike to have a platform to show and share their work. Kaden, thanks for stepping to the mic in Tokyo.

Underground Food in Curitiba, Random Acts of Courage, and Teasing You with Upcoming PKNs

Presentations We kick off a new week of presentations with one from Curitiba (Vol. 1) and one from Cork (Vol. 3). In "Underground Food" (in Portuguese), Guilherme Caldas takes us on a tour Curitiba's lesser known culinary highlights. If you've been feeling like you need to get a bit more excitement in your day, try following Niall Doherty and his "Random Acts of Courage." Posters We've got a few new posters on our Tumblr blog, including the ones for PKN Mendoza Vol. 4 (above), PKN London Vol. 6, and PKN Dnipropetrovsk Vol. 1, which debuts tomorrow. Videos Instead of sharing photos today, and since there seems to be an absolute boom in these, today we share a few teaser videos that have been produced for PKNs -- we love them so much that we often play some at our PKNs here in Tokyo. Below, teaser videos for PKN Curitiba Vol. 2, PKN Tel Aviv Vol. 13, and PKN Lisbon Vol. 14. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J5alkNK6zI httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMu22YtbFiU Links"New voices seek to harmonize with Toledo arts community" [Toledo Free Press]Calendar Tonight (Monday, May 21) you have your choice of the very first PechaKucha Night in the city of Muscat, Oman, or another blockbuster PKN (Vol. 13) in Tel Aviv. Anamorphic Lens Love, an Unusual Flat in Florence, and Ottawa Panoramic

Presentations What's an anamorphic lens? Find out in this presentation (from PKN Cork Vol. 1) by Mike Hannon, as he talks about his love of this photography accessory, leaving you with the following thought: How can something so geeky be so entertaining? In this presentation (in Italian, from PKN Pisa Vol. 1), Juri Favilli covers an architectural renovation project for a flat in the middle of Florence's old town. The concept was to have new living areas in which most of the home's functions were placed in the walls. You end up with a living space with almost no furniture, which answered the client's request of wanting an "ordered home." Posters There are no new additions to the Tumblr blog today, so we'll highlight (above) yesterday's PKN Kyoto Vol. 7 flyer -- the event takes place this coming Sunday (June 17). Photos Above, a first look -- and a panoramic one at that -- at the scene for last night's PKN Ottawa Vol. 5, about 30 minutes before the start. As PKN Ottawa organizer Remco Volmer tells us, "the speakers were great, the room was nearly at capacity, and the vibe was terrific." Calendar First up, here are tonight's (June 14) events: PKN Pittsfield Vol. 14, PKN Toronto Vol. 16, PKN Ornskoldsvik Vol. 1, PKN Portsmouth Vol. 11, and PKN Saint-Etienne Vol. 10. Tomorrow, you can look forward to the following four events: PKN Zilina Vol. 19, PKN Orlando Vol. 6, PKN Des Moines Vol. 10, and PKN Paris Vol. 18.

Ippei Takahashi shares a project to reconstruct a nursery in Shichigahama. It features a large interior garden (patio-like), and is made to look like a large village. SANAA's Naoto Noguchi talks about a reconstruction project on the island of Miyato with the goal of maintaining the traditional lifestyle of the locals, and to preserve the sights and island nature.
