Coversation on Architecture

BY SANNAH EJAZ
@ VOL 3 ON MAR 10, 2018

In all our definitions and descriptions of space; positive space, negative space, layered space, flowing space, virtual space and folded space there is a feeling of intimidation for the architect faced with a wide cultural canvas often in this conflict architecture becomes fixed and permanent and shrugs off the ephemeral and the present. This presentation by Sannah Ejaz outlines ideas of space/time in architecture as opposed to architecture in space/time with respect to the role of the architect.

Dehleez

BY HASAN LASHARI
@ VOL 3 ON MAR 10, 2018

Threshold is defined as a doorway to be crossed at a transition from one place to another. Understanding the context of this statement on architecture, one has to see the diversity and the division within any metropolitan city, a city contains multiple worlds, with diverse cultures, existing in parallel, aware of each other, but seldom intersecting. It is the intersection of these spheres which is the focus of this presentation by Hasan Lashari - The threshold.

Pakistan's Metro Systems - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

BY AWAIS AQDUS
@ VOL 3 ON MAR 10, 2018

The presentation by Awais Aqdus is about the metro systems that have been and are being constructed in Lahore, Islamabad, Multan, etc. Having such massive structures running through the city while the only purpose these forms are serving is an extra lane, solely to drive a bus. Comparing our metro system to those present in Rome, Berlin, London, is it necessary for us to show these massive bridges and is the urban space they have occupied justified? How does this affect our urban fabric?

The Walls

BY MURTAZA BILAL AHMAD
@ VOL 3 ON MAR 10, 2018

As a freelance architect, one is perhaps more free to engage with opportunities than when one is an employee at someone else’s firm; you can afford to take risks and pursue novel solutions to interesting problems. All of this feeds into developing an indigenous language for one’s own practice and creative expression. As architecture is firmly rooted in real world parameters, it is imperative that one understands the context within which the practice is taking place. This is not only restricted to physical parameters/contexts such as the environment and the terrain but also abstract concerns such as the desires of the client and their hopes and expectations. However, it’s not always easy. There are days when one does not want to deal with each and every trivial thing, opting to only pay attention to the creative ‘good’ stuff. However, it is important to remember that these so called ‘trivialities’ are necessary to the creative process. This presentation by Murtaza Bilal Ahmad is about striking that balance and the practice of architecture in general.
